These divas are celebrating Filipino American History Month!
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated in the United States during the month of October. It was established to recognize the significant contributions of Filipino Americans to U.S. history, culture, and society. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) first introduced the concept in 1988, and in 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month.
The choice of October is tied to the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the United States. On October 18, 1587, a group of Filipino sailors, known as “Luzon Indios,” landed in Morro Bay, California, on the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza. This makes Filipinos one of the earliest Asian groups to set foot on what is now U.S. soil.
Filipino American History Month is a time for both Filipino Americans and the broader public to reflect on the historical and contemporary experiences of the community. It is an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding of Filipino American identity and to promote solidarity and representation in the broader Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Overall, Filipino American History Month is a celebration of history, culture, and community, acknowledging the diverse experiences and rich heritage of Filipino Americans across the United States.
